The project, titled Repetition, explores the meditative nature of digital screen-based media, discussing the possibilities that screen and AI technologies bring to the meditative experience. The finished outcome of the project is an installation that combines sound and abstract graphics.
The study involved an examination of contemporary online meditation and relaxation content, encompassing visual elements and sound element. This research informed the creation of experimental compositions that explored the experiential aspect of screen use through auto-ethnography, highlighting the fluid moments within this inward journey. Furthermore, the project utilized abstract graphics to convey visual expressions, incorporating AI-generated meditation visuals based on keyword training, with a soundtrack from Ryuichi Sakamoto's 2014 live performance in London, aiming to capture a chaotic yet unified soundscape as a poetic response to urban life.
The installation's square design, with seven laser-cut voids for screens, signifies the ordered screen space, while the rhythmic arrangement of voids represents the unregulated realm beyond, echoing meditative fluidity beyond technology. The mild steel structure, aged with a rusty patina finish, conveys a rustic texture and earthy tones, aligning traditional mindfulness with modern technology. These elements, alongside abstract visuals and experimental sound, symbolize the convergence of digital and meditative domains, fostering an immersive and contemplative experience.
